FS Reel Review: The Watchmen

The Watchmen

Starring: Malin Akerman, Billy Crudup, Matthew Goode, Carla Gugino
Director: Zack Snyder (of 300)

My take on it

As the opening sequence rolled on, I thought The Watchmen was going to be promising. I loved how artistic it looked and how the scenes contrasted with its soothing music. The first action scene between The Comedian, one of the Watchmen, and his attacker was brilliant. I thought it would set the tone for the rest of the movie.

Sadly, it didn’t.

In my opinion, the plot premise was good, but a little weak. The actors weren’t mesmerising at all, and couldn’t hold my attention for very long (except for the guy who played Rorschach). Carla Gugino, who played Silk Spectre, was more watchable in the few minutes that she appeared than all the rest of the lead cast combined.

I understand that The Watchmen were only police officers in costumes and should not be classified as superheroes (which might explain why they look so plain), but I wonder how the director will explain the broken walls and counter slabs in the fight scenes? For ordinary people, they sure are awfully strong.

I hadn’t read the comic, but I don’t think the movie convinced me to read it. A friend said that the director had been faithful to the story (except for a little alteration in the ending, apparently) but if that’s all there is to it, then the hell with it.

The makers of The Watchmen have done what I thought was impossible – to make a (super)hero movie so gawddamn boring.

i think to those who have not read the source material will definitely not like this movie. thus, viewers will be split into two groups- haters or lovers. i agree that some of the actors cannot command your attention but the reason why Watchmen will be worth watching is because of the underlying themes within the movie. I certainly recommend you to read the graphic novel because the characters are really well developed in that format. It's the mother of all literature of comic books. it is dry i agree with you, but the center of attention are not the action parts. It's the dysfunctional characters that make this book one of the best books ever written as voted by Time Magazine.

thanks. granted the books were well written (who am i to argue with Time), then this adaptation didn't give much justice to it. and for the record, i didn't hate it. i'm just a little miffed that the makers didn't do a better job at it.

maybe it is, as people thought it was good enough to be made into a movie. such a shame tho, it had a lot of potential.

I will have to agree with Roscharch on the book part, it's one of the best books I've read, but surely the movie didn't live up to what I expected. But it wasn't that bad either, only when you get to read the book, it's more disappointing.

I guess that's the thing about great books turned into movies...

I think the teaser for the movie was great but I saw some clips pirated during the premiere here in Manila and it looks boring.

basti:
although, Snyder had done a good job with 300. Maybe Watchmen was too introspective for him. tsk.

gorgeous:
yes, i have to agree with you there.
