This is incredible!
I saw this billboard while cruising through San Miguel Ave recently:
If you grew up in the Philippines, you should know the lady in the photo is Jinky Oda -- a dark-skinned actress/comedienne from the days of "Okey Ka Fairy Ko."
I nearly fell of my car seat when I saw it! How did she get so.... white? Surely, it's not that Glutamax she's endorsing??? If you've seen Tropic Thunder, Jinky kind of reminded me of the Robert Downey Jr character, who had undergone major surgery to make himself black.
It really makes you wonder why being fair-skinned is desperately sought after by Pinoys. Is this really just a Filipino thing, or are other Asians the same?
Is the lightness of your colour really a standard of beauty? I admit, I'm guilty of having used some of these whitening lotions and toners, but I've never taken any pills (glutathione supplements) because I'm too scared of what it will do to my kidneys. I'm not vain enough to risk my health.
But I've stopped doing anything of that sort -- I'm too fond of the beach and if I'll just end up going back to my normal colour, then what's the bloody point of it all? I've accepted what I am au naturelle.
Here's a rather cheesy video of Jinky's supposed transformation. It's amazing to see how one can go from one extreme to another. I suggest you start at time stamp 2:20 minutes because the video is unbelievably long.

November 26, 2008 at 8:36 PMNevertheless, it kinda amazes me how fair-skinned Jinky has become. xD
breakfast is the most important meal. u should not skip it. at least have some milk. :D
November 27, 2008 at 12:01 PMthe food in the picture is very yummy although it's a little oily.
I was walking over a footbridge on EDSA when I saw the billboard and I couldn't believe my eyes.
December 10, 2008 at 5:05 PMWhat caught my attention initially was the tagline: "from ebony to ivory".
And then I saw the woman advertising the obvious skin lightener...I was flabbergasted.
How could anyone hate herself that much that she would want to change the colour of her skin...doesn't she realise that its in the genes and no matter how many pills she swallows she'll never be white?
As a black person visiting the Philippines for the first time this has been one of the greatest culture shocks.
She is african american and I being one is ashamed of her.No matter how much whitening product she takes...she is still black!!!seriously this girl to get a psyhiatrist or something or better yet place her with our people then she'l know what she's dome is really disgraceful
January 31, 2009 at 9:50 PMI just don't understand all the people that saying negative stuff about her skin changing. Is it because she's the one endorsing the product and not your favorite actor or actresses? I mean you guys should not judge, she has a reason why and that is to start a new life. You guys do not know what she been through. If that's make her happy then I do not see why not. Wanting to be white or have fair skin doesn't mean you wanna be someone. She just go what pleases her. So all of you that saying bad or negative about this situation, you guys shot the hell up because if I know you just jealous. why not pay attention of yourself rather than someone else.
